Why we Grind/Hustle

Grinding or Hustling seems to be the mantra of anyone under 40. You can scroll through your timeline on Facebook and see plenty of post like “the grind never stops,” and “getting my hustle on, making this money.” I don’t want to knock anyone who has said this, but I think that our mentality is wrong about grinding or hustling.

writingThe idea behind grinding/hustling is that we can work hard enough to go from where we are to the top of the career ladder. We can work more hours, work more jobs, and have a side business to get from where we are to where we want to be. I think that employee and employers  have this mindset.

I was recently working at this job and the opportunity came up that there was an overtime shift on Saturday. I couldn’t work the shift because I had a previous scheduled event that I needed to be at. When I told my boss that, I received the “well you’re an adult, you can make your own decisions.” In their tone I could tell that they were not happy that I had something else to do. Almost like they expected me to make them the top priority in my life. For me that is not the case. Employers expect employees to be there at their call whenever and wherever.

Somehow in society we have gotten the idea that we need to chase money. That more money will fix our problems. That mentality is only half the battle. What we really need to look at are things like our budgets, spending habits and our view of money before we assume that we just need to make more money to fix the problem. You can look at our society and see that things are tailored to make us think that we need more money. There is a new Apple smart phone or Galaxy smart phone every year. Sometimes multiple times in a year. They are always advertised as the next big thing that we need to have. Do we ever ask ourselves why we need to have it. It’s simply because it’s available so we want it.

There are some positive aspects of grinding/hustling that are good. We should work hard at our jobs. We should look for opportunities for advancement. There is nothing wrong with this. However, when we were are out of balance and our priorities are switched around then our job can be higher or lower than it should be. Which could lead to our families suffering.

As christians sometimes we don’t grind/hustle for God as much as we do for our jobs or money.

Matthew 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

If we would seek God and His plans for us then we wouldn’t have to grind/hustle so much for other things. We develop a trust and reliance on God to provide for us. This is where our hustle/grind need to be.
