Why Your New Year’s Resolution will Fail

I was watching this YouTube video by Terri Savelle Foy on goal setting, and she mentioned how 93% of people do not accomplish their New Year’s goals. You can find the video [here] This was an amazing statistic to me. I have to admit that I have been in that 93% before.

Why we fail?

Why don’t we meet our goals? How can so many people fail to accomplish their New Year’s Resolutions every year? There are many programs and books that we can read to learn about how to accomplish our goals, but I think one of the main reasons that people fail to meet their goals can be found in the Bible:

Proverbs 29:18(KJV)
18 Where there is no vision, the people perish:

What’s Your Vision

So how does this relate to our goals? Most of us, myself included, set out each year to be a better person than we were the year before. It doesn’t happen or it happens on such a small scale that we have to strain ourselves to find the “good” that we did over the previous year. Every year is this way because we don’t have a vision of what a “better us” looks like.

A vision is a plan. It’s a destination. It’s us going from where we are now to where we want to be. Our goals and resolutions fail because we don’t have a concrete idea of where we want to go. If pressed about what our vision is for the next year, we could mumble and put something together. Most goals are things like “lose weight” and “save money.” While those things sound nice, that is also why we abandon our goals before the end of January.

My Heart has to be involved

When our hearts are not attached to the goal then we give vague and non-discriptive answers. Just saying that I want to lose weight doesn’t fully commit me to that goal. However, if I know in my heart that I want my overall health to be better, then I would set a goal of losing 15lbs. When our hearts are more attached to the goal, it increases our chances of accomplishing it. Even if we get off track, we are more likely to “get back on the saddle,” when there is a commitment from our hearts.

I want this upcoming year to be better than the previous one. I plan to be intentional and direct on how I want this to happen. What are some of your goals for 2017? What’s your vision for this year?
